Requirements

We can arrange a BSN appointment for you at IN Amsterdam. If you want to proceed, please fill out the intake form below and we will get back to you with the next steps.

In order to register yourself as an incoming expat in the Netherlands, you need to have a valid visa or EU passport. If not, you should first turn to the IND and apply for a visa applicable to your situation.

If you previously had a BSN number but migrated out of the Netherlands, your BSN is turned into non-resident status. This means your BSN number is not usable until you reactivate it again. The BSN appointment is suitable for that purpose as well.

Please make sure you bring the following:
- Valid passports for yourself and each family member.
- Original birth certificate(s) for yourself and each family member
- Original marriage certificate if you are bringing a spouse or partner.
- Proof of address at your prospective address in the Netherlands, such as a lease or purchase title.

The certificates are subject to a language and apostille requirements. Specific certificates may be required in specific circumstances. These details are outlined in the questionnaire below. Please read them carefully before you proceed.

Please list the full names of yourself and each family member joining.

2. Please confirm you have valid passport(s) for all joining family members.

Birth certificates

You must bring an original birth certificate for each joining family member. If you are a naturalized citizen to your country, the naturalization certificate is not a substitute for the birth certificate. You need to obtain the original birth certificate from your country of birth.

Any official document mentioned in this article needs to be apostilled. Unlike in some other cases, the apostille here has no expiration date. The document needs to be presented in Dutch, English, French or German original or official translation. If you don’t have this document, you will be given a period of 4 months to provide it. This will not hold back the BSN number.

4. Relationship documents

(1) If you are a married couple, you need to bring an original marriage certificate.

(2) If you are an unmarried couple, you need to bring an original declaration of single/unmarried status from your previous town of residence.

Any official document mentioned in this article needs to be apostilled not longer than 6 months before the BSN meeting. It needs to be presented in Dutch, English, French or German original or official translation. If you don’t have this document, you will be given a period of 4 months to provide it. This will not hold back the BSN number.

5. Exceptional circumstances

(1) If you are divorced and bring a child from that previous marriage, you need to bring an original divorce ruling or settlement agreement that confirms your custody over the child. The document needs to be apostilled not longer than 6 months before the BSN meeting.

(2) If you have a child from a deceased partner or spouse, you need to bring the original death certificate that confirms this. The document needs to be apostilled. Unlike in some other cases, the apostille here has no expiration date.

(3) If you bring an adopted child, you need to bring an original adoption certificate that confirms your custody over the child. The document needs to be apostilled not longer than 6 months before the BSN meeting.

6. Proof of Address

You need to register yourself at an address in the Netherlands, and this needs to be proven by way of any of the below documents:

(1) A signed tenancy agreement or deed of transfer pertaining to a residential living space in the Netherlands. The effective date of the contract should precede the day of your BSN appointment.

(2) Signed declaration of consent from the main occupant of a residential living space in the Netherlands, allowing you to register at their address, along with a copy of their passport. Template registration forms can be found here.
